6. Santiago church (facade S.XII, inside S. XIX-XX)

Summary

This church, located on the Camino de Santiago was declared of cultural interest. its extraordinary façade was built around 1180-1190, at the end of the 12th century. In the arches overlapping the door in a curved way, various medieval trades are represented. There are people minting money, we also see blacksmiths, musicians, warriors … even an acrobat. Can you recognize her? She’s upside down!

The most outstanding decoration is the famous Pantocrator. This word means Almighty God and it is located on the frieze, above the arches; Christ, with the book of life in hand and accompanied by the evangelists: Matthew represented as an angel, Luke as a bull, Mark represented as a lion and John as an eagle. The work was undoubtedly made by two different artists. The image of the Pantocrator and the evangelists is of a high quality. However, on both sides of this representation we identify the apostles, in whom it is clear that the quality of the carvings isn’t so good.

The church was burned in 1811 and had to be rebuilt inside. Since 1993, its interior houses a museum of sacred art.
