4. San Andrés church (S.XVI)

Summary

This elegant and monumental temple is known as “Carrión’s cathedral”. Located to the north of the town, it was built on a previous church. The original tower was destroyed by a fire during the War of Independence, so it was later rebuilt in brick combined with stone

On the main portal there is a niche with an image of Saint Andrew the Apostle, a work of 1702. Inside, the choir stalls come from the former Benevivere monastery, the main altarpiece was moved from the church of Santa María del Camino and there are also artistic elements that arrived from some convents that disappeared after the Mendizábal Disentailment. The outstanding baroque organ from 1766, was restored in 2001 and it’s being used for concerts during the months of July and August as part of the Palencia organ festival.
